Arg-e Karim Khan Zand – Shiraz
Arg-e Karim Khan Zand is located in downtown Shiraz. This citadel was built during the reign of the Zandian dynasty and became known as the Arg-e Karim Khan Zand after Karim Khan selected the city of Shiraz as its capital and chosen this place as his residence. During the reign of the Pahlavi Dynasty, the citadel was used as a jail and was partially harmed.
In 1971, the citadel was transferred to the Department of Culture and Arts of the time. This magnificent building is now under the control of the Cultural Heritage Organization of the Islamic Republic of Iran. From a few years ago, the restoration of this building has begun to be used as the great Fars museum. This work was registered in 1972 as one of the national works of Iran.
History of Arg-e Karim Khan Zand Shiraz
The construction of the citadel was carried out between 1766 – 1767 A.D. and Karim Khan used the best architects to build it. He also completed the development with the best materials from inside and outside the country. This building was used during the Zandieh period as a place of government and in the Qajar period as a place of local governors. Abdul Hussein Mirza Farmanfarma, the governor of Fars, ordered to restore the miniatures paintings in this building.
The architecture of Arg-e Karim Khan Zand Shiraz
The Citadel is a combination of two residential and military architectures. The inner part of the citadel is arranged with terraces and painted rooms, fountains, and gardens. The three sides of the north, the south and the west each have a porch and six living rooms on both sides. The eastern side includes private baths and some amenities.
The tower and quadruple bulwark, along with the ditch that was previously dug around it, also played the defensive role of the construction. The thickness of the walls is 3 meters, and they are 12 meters high. The height of the towers is 14 meters, and they are made of bricks.
One of the four towers of this citadel had leaned like the Tower of Pisa and is considered one of the attractions of this tourist location of Shiraz. The process of stopping the leaning of the tower is vital concerning technicality and engineering.

Visiting the Arg-e Karim Khan Zand Shiraz
There are two ways to access this monument with public transport:
By Metro: Zandieh Station is the nearest metro station to the citadel, after which you have about 10 minutes walk to Shohada square, which you can also take with a taxi.
By Bus: To get to the citadel, select the buses that pass through Shohada square on their way. Get off the bus and take a few steps to the side of the fortress.
