Restoration of The Chapel of Dzor Dzor Maku West Azerbaijan
The Ministry of Energy of Iran approved the Baron Reservoir Dam project to liquefy the lands of the Maku Plain and began construction operations in the year 1987. The church was located at the same point where the dam wall should also have been built there and, according to the approved plans, upon completion and dewatering the lake, the church would end up drowned in the lake of the dam.
On the other hand, excavation of deviant tunnels and a series of construction explosions had partially harmed the building of the church. For this reason, the executive management of Iran’s cultural heritage organisation, with the assistance of experts and architects of the Republic of Armenia relocated the construction, to an altitude of about 110 meters and at a distance of 600 meters from that point, within 25 days.
