It is a common cosmetic procedure where a beam of highly concentrated is focused on hair follicles. A pigment in the follicles absorbs light that destroys the hair.
Why is the laser hair removal done?
People quite often opt for Laser hair removal to remove the unwanted hair from the body including face, leg, arm, underarm, bikini line and other areas. Other benefits include:
- Precision-can selectively targets dark coarse while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged.
- Speed: During each pulse of laser an area of skin with multiple hairs can be treated. This process takes about one second.
- Sucess rate: the laser hair removal has a high success rate. Usually, the treated area would be hairless or with much lesser hair density after three to seven sessions.
The laser hair removal is considered as a medical procedure. Therefore the technician should be licenced and had undergone a sufficient amount of training to perform well. Hence it is imperative to check the credentials of the doctor or technician performing the procedure. Limit other methods like; plucking, waxing and electrolysis for six weeks before treatment. Since the laser targets hair root which is temporarily removed by waxing and plucking.
The direct sunlight exposure should be avoided for six weeks before and after treatment as it makes it less effective and increases the likelihood of complications after treatment.
What to expect?
Before treatment hair is trimmed to a few millimetres above the skin surface. Laser equipment’s adjusted according to the colour, thickness and location of hair being treated as well as skin colour.
Some minor ones; itching, pink skin, redness, swelling around the treatment area or swelling of follicles [follicular oedema] which disappear within two or three days.
Some serious ones; acne and skin discolouration, pain during the treatment. Numbing cream is applied 30 minutes before therapy while icing the area is done after treatment to relieve side effects faster.
With the proper selection and setting of laser and appropriate adjustment according to individual type of skin and treatment area majority of other side effects are avoided like: risk of burning the skin, discoloration o the skin, hypopigmentation [white spot] flare of acne, swelling around hair follicles, scab formation, purpura and infections.
